Today's Box Store Experience

Today I went to A Box Store (which shall remain nameless to prevent any chance of indirect advertising) to pick up a few household items. I don't like going there for many reasons. I hate the atmosphere and attitude of the shoppers who feel they don't need to watch out for others around them. I hate it when they don't look where they're going and walk straight into my wheelchair and get upset with me for just being in the aisle unless I quite loudly say, "Excuse Me" or "Watch out". I also don't like the long lines and the overall general lack of service. Today, as I was shopping, I actually was thinking, "This is pretty good. People haven't been rude, especially considering it was a back-to-school shopping frenzy. Staff were even offering help." In particular, I appreciated the kind gentleman who was working in the jewelry area. I needed a new watch battery. He didn't normally work in the area and quite openly shared he knew nothing about the area. However, he took the time to help me get a new watch battery. He wouldn't open up the watch for fear he might wreck it, but he provided the tools so I could do this. He offered to close it back up for me too. I also like the fact that when two individuals tried to skip the checkout line by paying for their items at the jewelry counter, he redirected them to the checkout lines as he was busy helping 'this nice lady' or something to that effect. After all that, it was too bad the watch didn't work with the new battery in place. I don't blame him, though. It's not his fault. The shoppers in general were even friendly. One lady offered that I could go in front of her in the line. So, I was planning to write this blog post about my surprisingly good experience at a store where I generally do not have good experiences. I really do take great efforts to avoid shopping at this store and will only go when I need specific items that I know are much cheaper here. I was planning out my blog entry as I was in line. A line that only had 4 people in front of me! Then, I pay for my purchases. That all goes well. So far, the blog entry is looking pretty positive in my mind.

Then I ask for a bag to put the toilet paper rolls in. I know for a fact the store has really large bags. They work especially well to hang off the back of my wheelchair, which is why I asked for this bag. The guy responds, "What, are you stupid?!" I respond with, "Excuse me? What did you say?" No response, of course. He didn't give me a bag either.

Honestly, instead of feeling offended, I actually found it funny. Of course, I didn't want him to know I found it funny. I didn't laugh until I was far enough away for him not to hear me. And, to be honest, no customer service employee should EVER say such a thing to any customer! The comment caught me by surprise, which is maybe why I found it funny. Maybe I found it funny because there had to be at least one thing that maintained the regular reputation of why I avoid going to this store as much as possible!

A Moment of 'Christmas' - A second wind of Birthday

When I got home today, I found a package by my door. My excitement grew. I love packages. :) Well, as long as they are good packages - not some bomb or something. Not that I've experienced that and not that I plan to. But packages in the mail are always fun. But, after a brief moment, I double checked to make sure it was mine because my old roommate still gets stuff here. Sure enough it was mine.

No pictures today, folks (but apparently, I'm a "picture crazy" "ant" ;) Thanks B! LOL). I thought, after the fact, this story would have made a good picture . This time, you get to picture this on your own.

So here goes ... picture this...

I walk to my room to open the package. To sit and enjoy the experience. The bed is made. There are a few clothes lying on the bed. Ok, more than just a few, but not a big pile. I'm sitting on the bed, with a reddish - maroonish coloured long sleeve t-shirt on and a pair of jeans. My socks are brown with an orange flower on them. I'm sitting cross-legged. My hair has a couple clips in it, holding my hair back, almost in a half pony tail. Silvery clips with sequins. It is dreary-looking outside - it seems to be snowing. (Oops, I said the 's' word). Because it's darker outside, my bedroom light is on.

I am a little eager in opening the package. Afterall, by then I had read who it was from and knew it was a present for me. :D I remember a text message from my niece a few days ago asking me what my favourite colour was so I wondered what thing might be orange. :D Thanks K. :D At first I start with care. I snip a corner with a small scissor with orange handles (do you get a theme?), making sure not to cut any contents. Then, I stick my finger in the hole and rip. It is easy at first. Then there is some resistance, so I rip ... hard! In an eager fashion. And there is dust everywhere! It looks like a mouse nest. Seriously! Shredded recycled paper bits. And every time I reach into the package to take out another item, I get more dust all over me and the bed. As I pull out each item, I also am brought back to when I lived in Australia. Christmas in Australia.

When I was in Australia, my family and my small group sent me my birthday presents by mail in boxes (one from each). I had fun pulling out each item, reading the notes and enjoying a laugh by remembering special times. Or smiling at memories or the thoughts that went into the notes and the presents. It was exciting. It was fun. And I also was alone. Not in a bad way. But I lived far away from family. So, there was a bit of nostalgia. A sense of missing my loved ones. And a sense of being loved, knowing they took the time to put something together to send to me. Back then, I was experiencing Christmas in summer time. No snow to be seen. Beautiful green trees like today. Maybe on a day similar to today - well, maybe not - a little hotter perhaps. :D Particularly becaue today, we have sleet, or dare I say the 's' word???

Back to today. The bearers of gifts know me well. They know I like chocolate. Dark chocolate in fact. I find 4 different kind of dark chocolate bars. One I am especially eager to taste - Cherry-Chilli-Chocolate. I am curious. I also find Clod Hoppers, Lindt chocolate, and fizzy Mini-Eggs - these should be interesting too. The orange thing is a bright orange stress ball with a happy face on it. :D There is also a book by a well-known inspirational speaker and a set of encouragement cards. And each of my nieces sent me a picture they drew together with a page of rainbow stickers. Their characters are so evident in the pictures, and I smile, remembering the good times with them. The card has one of my favourite verses, Phil. 1:3 - "I thank my God every time I remember you". It's a good verse when loved ones are far away. And it brings me back to the time I received a note from a friend with this verse inside. The good old days. The front of the card has a little chiding in it - "Youth is the gift of nature, but age is a work of art" - chiding in that I'm aging but also beautiful, in that that aging is a beautiful thing - a work in progress, a wonderful piece of art. The card shows love, both in the card chosen and in the note inside. Thanks C for your thoughtfulness! Thank you all for everything!

With the final reach into the bag to make sure I got everything, I accidentally rip it further - I never knew a mail envelope could look so much like a mouse nest. Or the remains of one. I sit there laughing. My shoulders shaking. My laugh - according to my mom - like a tire rolling down the hill. The mouse nest is everywhere! I will need a vaccuum cleaner to clean up the mess. Then, I pick it up to close it, and accidentally puff more. How is this possible??? There are apparently 2 layers of mouse nest! So, now, it is sitting next to my garbage can. I plan to show the bag to my cousin when she arrives in a couple minutes. We seem to find similar things funny and she is not feeling very well - maybe a good laugh will do her some good. And, maybe we'll share a little chocolate while we watch a movie. In the mean time, I should find some supper. So I don't just eat chocolate for supper.

I thought it was Chicken

Today, I was having lunch with my boss and one of the guests. I noticed my boss looking at me in an odd way a couple times, but thought nothing of it. My plate of food was good... Shepherd's Pie, some salad, and a piece of what looked like barbecued chicken.

I started off by cutting off a piece of my chicken with a fork and knife. Thought it was kind of sweet with a cinnamon flavour. I had a few bites of other food, then continued to eat my chicken. As I was eating my chicken, I was thoughtfully thinking it was quite a unique flavour mix for chicken. The chicken was quite dry. Not a typical texture for any kind of food. I thought it might be some meat roll.

Halfway through my piece of chicken, I commented the flavour was unique, kind of cinamonny. My boss burst out laughing. His laugh is distinct ... everyone knows it's him when he laughs. He informed me I was eating a cinnamon breadstick roll that was supposed to be my dessert and he had been eyeing one but they wouldn't give him one in the food line up. I was just a wee bit embarrassed. He went on to say quite loudly, "You thought it was a meat roll, didn't you!" And laughed some more. Quite loudly and boisterously. He then proceeded to ensure that many other staff and guests knew what happened, walking to at least one other table to share the story. In particular, to the ones who would ensure I would never hear the end of it. He figures I will never live this incident down. I'm sure with my co-workers, I won't.

Ah well, I'm a good sport. I had a good laugh too! I am still laughing when I think about it. The moment was priceless! By the end, my boss was getting used to the idea that I was eating 'meat'. He acknowledged it looked a bit like meat, particularly when he compared it to the larger cinnamon roll he was given when he went back through the line to get the cinnamon breadstick roll he had been eyeing. Seriously the saucy appearance on the outside looked like a sauce had been brushed on it during the "BBQ process".

Yellow ... or is it orange?

I went for coffee at Starbucks this evening. They closed early. To appease the people in the Starbucks, they handed out free coffees to everyone there ... the leftovers, I'm guessing. They gave out the largest size ... and it was caffeinated.

So, it's 2:30 am and I'm wide awake. I only had 1/2 of it ... but remember, I had a coffee before that (mind you, it was decaf). I was talking to a friend halfway across the country until about 1 am. At that time, I said I should get ready for bed. Hehe. Guess I didn't. The coffee is keeping me up ... I may as well post something.

Today, I bought a new winter jacket. The yellow one has seen better days. At a birthday party on Friday, when the temperature was well below zero, the zipper broke again. There's only so many times you can squeeze the slider with a plier to 'fix' the zipper. I found a jacket at MEC that was on sale. Apparently, it's a good time to buy winter jackets ... they are trying to clear out this season's clothes.

Later, I went to a mall to develop a film and to check on jackets there too in case there was another that I liked that was cheaper and good quality. I must say that there are many jackets out there solely for 'fashion' and not for warmth. There was one jacket that was a 'winter parka' where the tags did not talk anything about warmth but showed about 20 different pockets and gadgets with the jacket including an mp3 pocket, a cell phone pocket and a pocket for a ski lift ticket that can be pulled down to show the ticket. If all those pockets were full, that jacket would be very heavy. Definitely something worth stealing for those who are so inclined. As I was leaving the mall, I saw a shoe repair place and decided to check whether they could fix my zipper on my yellow jacket. Sure enough, they could. Well, sort of. They replaced the slider - in a hideous colour that does NOT match the jacket. Oh well, that jacket is now my back-up jacket.

I should tell the story of my yellow jacket ... why I bought it. :)

I saw the jacket first in a catalogue. Unfortunately, the price was about $300. Quite out of my budget. That was probably 8 years ago. The winter following my return from Australia (7 years ago), I realized my previous jacket was losing it's stuffing ... from a hole in the back of the jacket. Definitely time for a new one. I was shopping with my sister and her husband. I saw the jacket in a store ... on sale for $99! My first thought was, "Wouldn't it be fun to shock mom?" I could totally picture her response .... she'd stand at the top of the stairs by the kitchen, lean over a bit, sort of twist her mouth, tilt her head and say, "Yellow????" when she'd see the jacket for the first time. I so looked forward to showing her the jacket for the first time. I bought the jacket primarily for the shock factor. And, sure enough ... I got the exact reaction I was expecting including the facial expression and everything else I described. Except, she said, "Orange????" I still smile when I think about that moment. The jacket was well worth the 'shock factor'. :) Sorry mom, not trying to make fun of you so please don't be offended. You are just predictable in some things. Hehe.

This new jacket, however, is 'sensible'. It's a more neutral colour. It's also less bulky and it's nice and soft. No 'Michelin man' jacket for me - that seems to be a very popular style right now. Hopefully the jacket will be as warm as the yellow one. When I got home after going for coffee, the temperature was -20, I believe, Wind chill not factored in. It kept me warm tonight as we went for coffee ... me on my scooter and my friend walking.

Ok, time to get ready for bed now. My eyes are almost closing. And it's now almost 3 am.

I thought you were a goose

So ... the story goes like this.

I was on my way to work on my scooter.

All of a sudden, I looked to my right, and there were 2 geese just outside of my reach, RIGHT beside me. It startled me for a moment.

I keep on going and I see this guy in front of me. He was twitching a bit, like people do when they are high. He was also weaving a bit on the sidewalk. I thought, "this will be interesting trying to get past this guy".

I get up to him, and he sort of turns, puts up his hands in a gay sort of fashion (I don't know how else to describe this, so please don't be offended with this description), looking sort of freaked, and says,

"I thought you were a goose and you were going to bite my bum".

I did not know how to respond. As soon as a I was a bit ahead I started laughing and pretty much laughed the rest of the way to work.

I'll give him credit though, my scooter does make funny sounds, often likened to ducks.

More pictures of the geese:

Turkish Tea Table: A short table for short people

Turkish Tea Table: A short table for short people

Today, Jorge, one of my co-workers, strides towards my office with this huge mischievous grin, carrying this thing. I couldn't tell what it was. He walks in and sets it down and says, "A short table for short people, do you like it?" He then says, "Happy Birthday". He told me it is an antique Turkish Tea Table and he thought it would be perfect for me. We had a good laugh. Then he wished me a good weekend and left my office. I am still laughing about this. I told a few of my other co-workers about the table conversation and they couldn't believe that Jorge would actually say what he did. But we have a good-natured relationship and I know it's all in fun. Afterall, I started the whole 'short people' comments by posting a sign on the microwave: "Please leave the microwave on the counter. Short people work here" after I continually found the microwave placed on the high microwave shelf every morning even though co-workers would kindly place it on the counter for me each day so I could use it. You'd think people would get the point. The sign has worked. It has never been placed on the high microwave shelf since then, but I still get comments from co-workers about how they love the sign. Only I could get away with a sign like that. :)

Description of the Turkish Tea Table: The top part is a huge serving tray, approximately 2 feet in diameter. This tray can be removed and placed on the pedestal below. The table stands about 1 foot high. As you can see in the picture above, it is well below the height of the chairs and the chairs are of normal height.

Hummingbird feeder ... or is it?

Today, I went for lunch with my co-worker/friend and his grandpa. After the lunch, we looked at a few stores. The one store was a glass art store. I ended up being the token girl providing requested 'advice' as to which items were appropriate for gifts. I didn't mind. I got to look at 'girl' things. It's not like I spend a lot of time looking at candles. (Oh, wait, that's not true! I love playing with candles!!!!) Amazing work in this store, though. They had these hummingbird feeders. I had to laugh when my friend saw the hummingbird feeders and pointed them out to me. I said they were hummingbird feeders. He started laughing and said he honestly thought they were bongs for smoking pot. There was this really neat kaleidoscope at this store. I really want one, but I am not willing to pay over $100. The kaleidoscopes were made out of coloured glass pieces and you could manually spin this other piece that had gems and pieces of glass in it. As you spin this piece and look through the view finder, you see the kaleidoscope changing designs. So cool!

Is it aliens?

I wanted to use my toaster the other day. However, I soon became distracted. I pressed the lever down, and there was a glow.

Now, I'm not talking just ANY glow. It was like the room lit up. I let go of the lever, and the glow went away.

I pressed the lever a few more times, and the glow kept on returning. I looked inside the toaster, and I didn't see ANY glow inside. No red wires. Nothing. But the room seemed to light up.

It seemed like the glow was coming from above. Was this possible? I pressed the lever again. This time, I looked up when the glow appeared.

AND THERE WAS LIGHT!

A mouse catcher and a latina

What do the two have in common? Me, apparently.

I walked into a meeting today with my footstool, that, according to my colleague, has two mouse holes for catching mice.

As soon as I walked in, he says, "Are you catching mice today?" He hadn't seen the foot rest before.

Then, I (she) quipped: "short people need foot rests".

He said "You'd fit right in in Latin America. You belong in Latin America".

She said: "I am Latino".

He said: "NO, not really!" in his comical Argentinian manner. (They are, afterall, known for their comedic behaviour at times)

She said: "well, I was born in Mexico".

He said: "you certainly don't speak Spanish" ... in a quite blunt, matter-of-fact tone.

The conversation continued with me stating that I really want to learn Spanish. I also did explain why I was born in Mexico. He, apparently, teaches Spanish. I explained that I grew up eating Mexican food and am quite comfortable around Latin Americans. He thought I would absolutely LOVE to come to his Spanish classes. They meet to cook a Latin American meal and have conversation around the dinner table, all in Spanish of course. I'm not sure if there are any official lessons, or if they have more 'words of the day' to use in the conversation. I think this opportunity is exciting! I think it will be a fun way to meet people and learn the language.
